“Can You Leave At Least One Mail Box In The Central District?”

Every month I utilized the mail boxes that were located at either the Tradewinds Hotel, ANZ bank in Tafuna or Shoe Tree in Nuuuli. I noticed there was also another one at the Haleck’s compound in Pavaiai.

It was a convenience and I appreciated the Post Office for installing these boxes so that one who lives and works in the central area could simply stop at any of these locations and drop off mail.

Today I stopped at Tradewinds only to find it was removed. I proceeded to ANZ and that too, was removed. My next stop of course was Shoe Tree and guess what?? Gone!!

I called our local Post Office and asked where all the boxes vanished to. The response was that the head office in Honolulu thought they weren’t being utilized enough and thought it best to have them all removed.

“All of them?” I asked. “All of them.” was the response.

I’ll admit, four mailboxes that I know of well, might have been a bit too much for the central area. Removing 2 or 3 of them I could understand. But all of them? Not leaving one measly mail box for the central area?

Did not one employee of our local Post Office consider that maybe they should leave at least one little box in this populated area of residents and business? It’s no secret that the traffic in town is mostly caused from the poor parking area at the Post Office.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who dreads the daunting task of checking the mail just for that reason. But I’m getting off track now— that’s a whole different can of worms.

Could you just bring back one box ?? Just 1??

I'm sure we can iron this out with the "new" Postmaster, heard that person is very personable and willing to hear of all suggestions and advise. Common Cause pls take a stroll there and give the new Postmaster your advise, you will not be turned away disappointed. I can assure of that if it's the person I'm thinking of is appointed the new Postmaster.

"Common Sense"...i'm sure it's "common sense" to use the monies...but that doesn't happen in the real world that we live, for this kind of "sense" is why the government can't pay they're people. The postal service is a Federal Property/Government...and only the Post Masters would be able to make that call to add/replace a post office station such as the one in LEONE. As for the little drop boxes...i'm sure the postal employees in Samoa did not "speak up"...for of course, 4boxes was too many in the central area...and how would the Honolulu Postmaster know "it wasn't being utilized"...so the right thing is to remove 1 or 2 and maybe 3 which one would suffice...but nope...employess of samoa post office dont speak up. I hope the Post Office will have more funds to fund a new building and a bigger parking lot for downtown...and maybe add other buildings on each side of the island...manuia le aso!

Did anyone consider using some of the tsunami relief funding to establish a new post office in the central area? The Leone post office is now defunct as a direct result of the tsunami. Having a post office in the Nuuuli/Tafuna area would indeed go a long way towards reducing traffic in the harbor area as well as saving a lot of gasoline currently expended by everyone on island having to go to Fagatogo once a week or maybe more often just to check their mail. I see several very nice looking new government buildings have come up in the last year, but I guess no one thought of just establishing a new post office in the Nuuuli/Tafuna area.
